WebPrint – 270 kW Industrial Solar PV Installation (Citywest, Dublin)

Project Overview

In March 2024, Veep Energy delivered a 270 kW industrial Solar PV system for WebPrint at their Citywest, Dublin production facility.

The system was engineered to support continuous, energy-intensive printing operations, maximise on-site consumption, and deliver long-term operational and ESG value.

Client Background

WebPrint (webprint.ie) is Ireland’s largest independent cold-set web offset printer, operating from facilities in Cork and Citywest, Dublin, since 2006.

The company specialises in:

  • High-volume, full-colour printing

  • Newspapers, magazines, and commercial print products

  • 24-hour production and online ordering

As a high-throughput manufacturing environment with sustained daytime electricity demand, WebPrint was an ideal candidate for a fully optimised on-site Solar PV solution.

System Design & Technical Specification

The Solar PV system was designed using the SolarEdge commercial platform, prioritising yield, safety, and long-term operational efficiency.

Installed capacity

  • 270 kW Solar PV array

Key equipment

  • 2 × 100 kW SolarEdge commercial inverters

  • 630 high-efficiency glass-on-glass PV modules

  • 315 SolarEdge Commercial P850 power optimisers

Design considerations

  • High self-consumption profile aligned with 24-hour printing operations

  • Optimiser-level monitoring for precise performance visibility

  • Enhanced safety architecture suitable for an industrial rooftop environment

Performance & Energy Results

Since commissioning, the system has delivered exceptional real-world performance:

  • Total electricity generated: 424 MWh

  • On-site consumption: 100% self-consumed

  • Grid import reduction: Significant and sustained

  • Operational alignment: Solar generation closely matches production demand

This level of self-consumption maximises the financial return of the system while insulating the facility from energy price volatility.

Technology Advantages – SolarEdge Commercial Platform

The SolarEdge architecture delivers approximately 20% higher energy yield compared to traditional string inverter systems, particularly in large commercial and industrial environments.

Key benefits include:

  • Module-level monitoring
Enables rapid fault detection and targeted maintenance

  • Improved O&M efficiency
Reduced troubleshooting time and lower long-term operational costs

  • Enhanced fire safety
SolarEdge Sense Connect™ technology provides continuous monitoring of DC connections, reducing fire risk and improving compliance confidence

  • Future-proofed system design
Scalable and adaptable for future site changes or expansion

ESG & Carbon Impact

For an energy-intensive manufacturing facility, the WebPrint Solar PV installation delivers measurable ESG outcomes:

  • Material reduction in Scope 2 carbon emissions

  • Verifiable on-site renewable electricity generation

  • Strong alignment with sustainability reporting and customer ESG expectations

  • Reduced reliance on grid-supplied fossil fuel electricity

Compliance & Quality Assurance

As with all Veep Energy commercial installations, the project was delivered by our in-house engineering and installation team and completed in full compliance with:

  • Irish electrical regulations

  • Safe Electric certification requirements

  • Manufacturer design, installation, and commissioning standards

Outcome

The WebPrint project demonstrates how industrial and manufacturing facilities can achieve near-perfect alignment between solar generation and operational demand when systems are properly engineered.

This installation continues to perform reliably and stands as a strong reference for:

  • Manufacturing

  • Print and publishing

  • Energy-intensive industrial operations

🌱 Estimated CO₂ Avoided

Based on Ireland’s average grid emissions factor (~0.27 tCO₂ per MWh):

  • Total solar generation: 424 MWh

  • Estimated CO₂ avoided: ~115 tonnes of CO₂

  • Scope: Scope 2 (electricity-related emissions)

  • Consumption: 100% on-site
