New SEAI Solar and Battery Grants: Up to €9,000 for Eligible Irish Homeowners
Updated 6 October 2026
SEAI has introduced new support for home battery storage, increased solar grants for homeowners receiving certain social welfare payments, and extended solar grant eligibility to more recently built homes.
For eligible households, the enhanced support can reach €9,000 towards solar panels and a battery. Other qualifying homeowners can receive up to €2,400 through the standard solar and battery grants.
At VEEP Energy, we can help you assess your options, choose suitable equipment and understand the application process.
What grants are available?
| Grant | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard solar PV grant | Up to €1,800 |
| Home battery grant — minimum 5 kWh | €600 |
| Standard solar PV and battery grants combined | Up to €2,400 |
| Enhanced solar PV grant for qualifying welfare recipients — up to 4 kWp | €8,400 |
| Enhanced solar PV and 5 kWh battery support combined | Up to €9,000 |
The enhanced €9,000 package is available to homeowners meeting the relevant welfare and property eligibility requirements. It is not the standard grant available to every household.
Who can qualify for the enhanced support?
SEAI lists the following qualifying Department of Social Protection payments:
- Fuel Allowance under the National Fuel Scheme.
- Jobseeker’s Allowance for more than six months, where the applicant has a child under seven.
- Working Family Payment.
- One-Parent Family Payment.
- Domiciliary Care Allowance.
- Carer’s Allowance, where the applicant lives with the person being cared for.
- Disability Allowance for more than six months, where the applicant has a child under seven.
Through the higher-grant route, eligible homeowners can select their own SEAI registered contractor or One Stop Shop.
SEAI also offers a separate fully funded Warmer Homes route. That scheme has its own eligibility conditions, and SEAI assesses and manages the upgrades.
More recently built homes can now apply
Solar PV grant eligibility has been extended to homes built and occupied before 2025.
This brings qualifying homes built and occupied during 2021–2024 within the scheme. The property must have an electricity Meter Point Reference Number, or MPRN, and must not have received previous SEAI solar PV funding at that MPRN.
For the standard solar grant, support is calculated as:
- €700 per kWp for the first 2 kWp.
- €200 per additional kWp between 2 kWp and 4 kWp.
- A maximum of €1,800 for systems of 4 kWp or larger.
Already have solar panels? Consider the €600 battery grant
Homeowners with an existing solar installation can apply separately for the new battery grant, subject to eligibility.
The grant provides €600 towards a battery of at least 5 kWh. Smaller batteries do not qualify, and installing a larger battery does not increase the grant amount.
The home must have been built and occupied before 2025 and must not have received previous SEAI battery funding at its MPRN.
If you are installing solar panels and a battery together, SEAI allows both grants to be requested through one application.
Why add battery storage?
A battery stores electricity for use later. For a home with solar panels, that can mean saving some daytime generation to help power the house in the evening.
Choosing the right battery involves more than meeting the grant’s minimum size. Your solar production, electricity consumption, tariff and existing inverter all affect which system makes sense.
At VEEP Energy, we can review your equipment and discuss the available options. If backup power is a priority, we can also explain which systems and installation arrangements support it.
Receive grant approval before work begins
You must receive your SEAI Grant Offer before installation starts. The battery grant cannot be applied retrospectively to an installation that has already started.
An SEAI registered Solar PV Contractor must complete the work in accordance with the scheme requirements. A post-works BER is required for solar PV applications and for battery applications where solar PV is present.
Check your grant offer carefully before proceeding, including the named contractor, approved works and grant amount.
